Air-Cooled or Water-Cooled UV LED: How to Choose

Air-cooled UV LEDs need no chiller, integrate fastest at the lowest cost; water-cooled deliver higher power, tolerate extreme temperature and dust, run quietly and reach 1.35 m in one unit.

One-sentence answer: Air-cooled UV LEDs need no chiller, run on 48 V DC, integrate fastest at the lowest cost and deliver 2–20 W/cm²; water-cooled UV LEDs remove heat through a coolant loop, deliver higher power (25–30 W/cm²), tolerate extreme temperature and dust, run quietly and reach 1.35 m in a single unit. Air-cooled is the default for normal factories; water-cooled for harsh environments or very high power.

Why LEDs need cooling

A significant share of LED electrical power becomes heat; rising chip temperature lowers optical output and shortens life. Cooling efficiency directly limits sustainable output, which is why the Excelitas SLM technology lists cooling as one of its four elements.

Air-cooled versus water-cooled UV LED: air-cooled systems (Phoseon FireJet ONE, FireEdge, OmniCure AC) need no chiller and integrate easily; water-cooled systems (Phoseon FireLine) suit extreme temperature and debris

Air-cooled is the first choice for normal factories; water-cooled for harsh environments or very high power. Image source: Excelitas UV Curing Product Selector Guide.

Comparison

Item Air-cooled Water-cooled
Infrastructure None Chiller and plumbing (e.g. 6 LPM)
Integration speed Fastest Piping required
Peak irradiance 2–20 W/cm² 10–30 W/cm²
Environment Normal factory High temperature, dust, oil mist
Noise Fan noise Low

Decision checklist

  • No chiller, fast start-up → air-cooled
  • Hot, dusty shop floor, quiet operation required → water-cooled
  • Heat-sensitive substrate → both are infrared-free; decide on power
  • Width over 1 m in one unit → water-cooled
  • Fiber draw tower → air-cooled FJ228 or water-cooled FP300 depending on draw speed

FAQ

Q: Does an air-cooled unit blow heat onto the workpiece?

A: The airflow is an internal heat-sink path and the source emits no infrared; workpiece temperature rise is far below a mercury lamp.

Q: Can air-cooled LEDs run continuously?

A: Yes; Phoseon air-cooled systems are rated 40,000+ hours provided the intakes are not blocked.
