Application Case Study

UV Radiometry for Irradiance Measurement and Process Validation

Measure the irradiance and dose the part actually receives — at the light-guide tip, at the cure site, inside the cure ring — and keep the record.

01 · Application

Application

A UV process is specified in irradiance and dose, but the part never sees the number on the controller — it sees what arrives through the light guide, the lens, the working distance and the ageing of the lamp. Radiometry closes that gap: measuring at the tip, at the cure site or inside the cure-ring fixture, at qualification and on a schedule, and writing the value down. In a validated plant that record is what proves the process has not moved.

02 · Challenge

Challenge

A radiometer that does not match the source measures the wrong thing. A broad-spectrum lamp and a monochromatic LED need different sensors and different calibration; a narrow LED beam has to be caught at the centre of the detector at the right focal height or the peak is missed; and a number without traceability or a calibration date is not evidence. Measuring where it is convenient — at the lamp, not the part — hides light-guide losses that are the usual reason a cure gets weaker.

03 · Solution

UV Curing Solution

ETIA matches the radiometer to the source. For the S2000 Elite and S2000, the OmniCure R2000 calibrates the system in a closed loop and, with 2, 3, 5 and 8 mm light-guide adapters, measures at the tip; Cure-Site and Cure-Ring detectors on the same R2000 measure at the bond itself or inside a cure-ring fixture, single or dual channel. For the LX500 and its V3 LED heads, the OmniCure LS200 measures irradiance from 50 mW/cm² to 40 W/cm² (or optical power from 1 to 2000 mW with the LS200P), ±10% with 1 mW/cm² resolution, NRC-traceable, on a one-year calibration cycle; the Beam Positioning Kit holds the sensor at the focal height, and the LM2011 light meter makes the same sensor a stand-alone instrument. The result is one measured value per station, with a date, that a validation file can cite.

04 · Recommended Product

Recommended UV Curing System

OmniCure® R2000 is recommended with S Series lamp systems and OmniCure® LS200 with LX500 LED systems, so the sensor, the calibration and the positioning match the source being verified; cure-site and cure-ring detectors add measurement at the bond for validated medical assembly.

Recommended Configuration

05 · Benefits

Benefits

Irradiance measured where the part is, not where the lamp is
Sensor and calibration matched to lamp or LED
Traceable, dated values for validation files
Lamp and LED ageing seen before it reaches the product
Station-to-station consistency checked with one method
Calibration cycle and re-certification handled through ETIA
