Application Case Study

UV Spot Curing for Laboratory Adhesive Screening and Specimen Preparation

Screen adhesives, run dose and irradiance trials, bond test specimens — then transfer the same head, lens and dose to the line.

01 · Application

Application

Before an adhesive reaches a production line it goes through a bench: does its photoinitiator respond to the wavelength on offer, what dose gives full cure, how much irradiance the part will tolerate before it warms, and whether lap-shear or pull-test specimens bonded under those conditions hold. A spot curing system on the bench answers those questions one variable at a time — and, chosen well, is the same system the line will run.

02 · Challenge

Challenge

A laboratory needs range where a line needs repetition. One week it is a 365 nm acrylic, the next a cationic epoxy that wants the deep UV; one specimen is a 3 mm dot, the next a 12 mm area. A source with a single wavelength and a single spot size answers half the questions, and a source whose output drifts turns a dose series into noise.

03 · Solution

UV Curing Solution

ETIA recommends two bench sources. The OmniCure S2000 Elite covers the broad-spectrum case: a continuous 250–600 nm lamp, up to 37 W/cm², with user-interchangeable filters (250–450, 320–390, 320–500, 365, 400–500 nm) so the same lamp can be narrowed to the band under test, and StepCure 2.0 profiles stored to SD card so a trial is repeatable by anyone. The OmniCure LX500 covers the LED case: V3 heads at 365, 385, 395 and 405 nm, up to 27 W/cm², ±5% optical stability, intensity in 1% steps from 5 to 100%, exposure timed to 0.1 s, and focusing lenses from 3 to 12 mm to set the spot. Both accept a radiometer, so the dose in the report is a measured number. When the process is fixed, the head, lens, filter and profile move to production unchanged.

Recommended UV Curing System

OmniCure® S2000 Elite and OmniCure® LX500 are recommended together for a curing laboratory: one broad-spectrum source that can be filtered, one LED source at four wavelengths, both with programmable profiles and a radiometer, so any adhesive on the market can be screened and any result transferred to the line.

Recommended Configuration

OmniCure® S2000 Elite (broad spectrum) · OmniCure® LX500 with V3 LED heads (365 / 385 / 395 / 405 nm)

05 · Benefits

Benefits

One bench covers broad-spectrum and 365–405 nm LED
Filters and lenses change the band and the spot without changing the source
Cure profiles stored and repeated by anyone (StepCure 2.0)
Dose and irradiance measured, not assumed
Results transfer to production with the same head and settings
Trials booked with ETIA when the lab has no source yet
