01 Ā· Application

Application

Radiofrequency ablation catheters treat cardiac arrhythmia by delivering energy through electrodes at the distal tip. That tip packs ring or tip electrodes, thermocouples or thermistors, irrigation ports and lead wires into a few millimetres of shaft, and every one of those interfaces is bonded. The bonds have to hold through deflection and torque inside the heart, seal the irrigation lumen, and not interfere with the temperature sensing that governs the energy delivered.

02 Ā· Challenge

Challenge

The geometry leaves no room for error. Adhesive volumes are small, the parts are metal against polymer, and neighbouring components are heat-sensitive — a thermocouple bonded with too much thermal input reads wrong for the life of the device. The bond line often runs around the shaft, so light has to arrive evenly on all sides rather than from one direction. And because these are life-sustaining devices, the dose that produced a good bond in validation has to be the dose delivered on every station, every shift, for the life of the product.

03 Ā· Solution

UV Curing Solution

ETIA recommends the OmniCure S2000 Elite with Closed-Loop Feedback for ablation tip assembly. Closed-loop control holds the optical output within ±5% as the lamp ages, so the dose specified during validation is the dose the part receives months later. A High Power Fiber Light Guide from the 806- Series brings that output to the tip at the working distance the fixture allows, and multi-leg guides or the UV Cure-Ring Optical Adapter give the 360° exposure a circumferential bond line needs. The R2000 Radiometer calibrates each station against a NIST-traceable reference, so a multi-station line can be shown to be delivering the same dose everywhere — the record a validated process has to produce.

04 Ā· Recommended Product

Recommended UV Curing System

OmniCureĀ® S2000 Elite is recommended for ablation catheter tip assembly because closed-loop irradiance control, fiber light-guide delivery into a confined tip and NIST-traceable calibration together give the documented, repeatable dose that validated electrophysiology device manufacturing requires.
